Special Technology Sessions (STS) on Greening of Aviation, Transport and Renewable Energy
Special Technology Sessions (STS) in Aviation, Surface Transport, Renewable Energy, Information Technology and Related Industry Areas
Why Special Technology Sessions (STS)
The History of STS
Already since the ECCOMAS Congress 1996 in Paris, Special Technology Sessions (STS) have been organised on technologies and research especially of relevance for industrial applications, mainly in the field of aeronautics but also for research in renewable energy, transport, information technology and other industry areas. At every ECCOMAS Congress and CFD Conference since then, by numerous papers the STS presented the progress and achievements of research and industrial technology activities, especially also from activities within the Research Framework Programmes of the European Union.
The Rational for the STS
Europe’s Industry still has a need for advanced computational methods, especially in areas as fluid dynamics, structure mechanics and multidisciplinary optimisation, where especially aeronautics was and still is a front runner in the application of innovative numerical methods.
Within ECCOMAS, its Industry Interest Group (IIG) takes care for the link between research and industry and supports the organisation of STS at the ECCOMAS congresses. They address the link of innovative computational methods with industrial applications.
The STS Objectives at ECCOMAS 2024
The STS will address advanced sustainable technologies for Aviation, Transport and Renewable Energy.
Aviation, Transport and Renewable Energy need to play a driving role towards limiting global warming. The targeted energy transition in aviation and transport with the goal of climate neutrality by mid-century requires the increase in novel technologies and enhanced innovation.
At ECCOMAS 2024, the STS will address the development and use of computational methods, their validation and application contributing to reducing emission of relevant areas of aviation, surface transport and renewable energies. This includes innovative computational methods and design tools for all required technology areas reaching from enhancing the classical areas as fluid dynamics and structure mechanics up to concepts of novel configurations and advanced propulsion systems (including electrical power systems and the use of Hydrogen).
As the ECCOMAS Congress focuses on computational methods, the aim of the STS and their papers is to provide an overview on the state-of-the-art and future technologies especially in computational and digitalized methods and tools (modelling, simulation, optimisation and control, Artificial Intelligence (AI), etc.) for the application in aviation, surface transport and renewable energy industries. The STS can also address the validation and technology demonstration by experiments and testing. In the view of high-performance computing and big data handling, the STS will also address the use of computational methods for innovative production and operation methods for the different transport means and renewable energies.
The Scope:
Development and applications of computational methods for modelling, simulation, optimization as well as validation, testing and control technologies in Aviation, Transport (automotive, urban mobility, logistics, maritime and rail transport) and Renewable Energies.
The Candidate Topic Areas:
- Fluid mechanics (transonic aerodynamics, drag reduction, high-lift, hypersonic, flow control, etc.)
- Structure mechanics (advanced materials, structural design, composites, additive manufacturing, fatigue, etc.)
- Acoustics (aero-acoustics, noise reduction, vibration, CAA, etc.)
- Numerical methods (CFD, high order methods, hybrid RANS/ LES, DNS, uncertainty quantification, optimization, etc.)
- Disruptive vehicle architectures in aviation and surface transport (propulsion integration, novel configurations, etc.)
- Novel propulsion systems (turbomachinery, low emission propulsion, combustion, hybrid systems, electric propulsion, Hydrogen, etc.)
- Applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning and expert systems in the use in design, production, operation and maintenance.
Today’s central challenge for Aviation and Transport is minimizing the environmental impact. The Special Technology Sessions at the ECCOMAS Congress 2024 are expected to provide a better understanding and perspectives of the numerical tools and methods for the applications in Aviation, Transport and Energy in support of meeting the challenging greening goals.
How to organize an STS for ECCOMAS 2024
Experienced experts of aeronautics, transport, renewable energy and related industry are invited to organise the STS with selected specialists from industry, research institutions and universities. The STS organisers are free in choosing their speakers and ensure the scientific and technical quality of the STS.
Who intends to organize an STS needs to submit a tentative session title and a brief abstract ( < 1 page) of the planned STS to the Organizers of ECCOMAS IIG STS Committee (see below). Each STS will have two hours at the congress, and its organizer needs to identify 4 – 6 speakers for the planned STS. The proposed STS being set up by invitation do not need to participate in a review process. The rules and deadlines for STS given by the ECCOMAS IIG and the Congress organizers need to be respected.
