Consideration of Realistic Soil Behaviour in Road Structures: A Numerical Investigation on the Cyclic Interaction between Road Struture and Subsoil

Numerical investigations of the structural behaviour of pavement structures are often the subject of research. Many of these studies are mainly concerned with the detailed modelling of the road-tyre interaction or the realistic modelling of the road surface materials, usually asphalt. The subsoil, as an integral part of the road structure, is often considered as a linear-elastic material in these analyses. In reality, however, the behaviour of the soil is highly inelastic and non-linear. Particularly under cyclic loading, plastic deformations can accumulate in the soil, which can potentially contribute to damage to the road structure.
