A validated multiscale model for in-stent restenosis in stented coronary arteries

In 2008 we proposed a multiscale model for in-stent restenosis [1] as part of the larger vision of the Virtual Artery [2]. This model was first implemented and applied in two dimensions [2-7] and subsequently in three dimensions [8-11], where we also provided first validation against porcine data. Uncertainty quantification of the resulting models was carried out [12 and references therein] confirming the key importance of re-endothelialisation for the overall neointimal tissue formation. In this contribution these results will be reviewed and put into perspective, and new results in relation to human data on in-stent restenosis will be discussed.
