Finite elements of class C1 are suitable for the computation of free-boundary equilibria of tokamak plasmas. Isoparametric approximations allow for a precise alignment of the mesh with the magnetic field line. Moreover, mesh alignment improves the accuracy of axisymmetric equilibrium approximations and fits with the high anisotropic nature of magnetized plasma flows. We go through the two combinations of C1 FEs which have been considered to solve the free-boundary equilibrium problem for a plasma in a tokamak.
