Despite several advances in the field of mathematical and numerical modeling, their application to real problems in the automotive industry remains a challenging task. With the MESHFREE software, Fraunhofer ITWM develops and implements a Generalized Finite Difference Method (GFDM) which successfully handles and virtualizes a varied range of applications, automotive in particular. The talk will focus on three critical applications of MESHFREE for the automotive industry. The first example will focus on studying the flow around a full car geometry when passing througha water pool. Several key features will be presented, which demonstrate that mesfree methods are key to model such applications. The second example will focus on capabilities of MESHFREE to deal with complex materials like snow. For example, it is of interest for the engineers to evaluate if snowflakes enter critical engine components in the early prototype phase. An industrial scenario will be examined. The last example will briefly showcase modeling of rollover tests in sand pits, where MESHFREE is coupled with an external structural solver, and corresponding numerical results have been validated on experimental benchmarks.
