Investigations of Boiling Flows with Adaptive Mesh Refinement

Nucleate boiling is a challenge for computational fluid dynamics because of the highly complex physics involved at the microscopic and submicroscopic scale. It encompasses a moving contact line whose correct modelling is key to successful comparisons of the bubble shapes, including microlayers, to the experiments. The modeling of the bubble using sharp interface models requires considerable computer power given the large range of scales involved. Numerical instabilities at a phase boundary with phase change are frequently triggered. Finally, physical modelling is uncertain in some respects including the accommodation coefficients and interfacial heat transfer resistance at both the solid-liquid and liquid-vapor interfaces.
