Variational Fracture and Applied Loads

Phase-field models for fracture were introduced as approximations of the "sharp interface" quasi-static models formulated by Francfort and Marigo. But those models cannot incorporate applied loads, while phase-field models can. This raises the basic question of what these phase-field models with loads might be approximating, if anything. We describe recently introduced "sharp interface" models that can incorporate both applied boundary and body loads.
